About
Pineal Cysts and Tumours
The pineal gland is a small endocrine gland located in the epithalamus, near the center of the brain. It produces a hormone called melatonin. Melatonin is responsible for regulating our wake and sleep cycles and photoperiodic (seasonal) functions. In a small number of the population a cyst or tumour will stem from this gland, the cause of which is unknown. The diagnosis of a pineal cyst or tumour is established by MRI imaging.
